9S: How to connect to a pair of BMs

I have a pair of BM's and a 9S, how should I hook them together?

This answer is for 9S but is also valid for the older and discontinued BM9S, BM14S and BM14S II. The 9S has 2 types of input:

  1. LFE input: this one should be used in a multi-channel configuration such as a 5.1 setup - the LFE = the ".1" channel - a discrete channel with special Low frequency effects.
  2. SUB inputs(stereo). these inputs can be used for bass management = play the low end of a stereo mix. These are the one to use in combination with a pair of BM's.

Connections:

  1. Connect the LEFT and RIGHT outputs of your audio source (DAW interface , mixer, DA converters, etc.) to the SUB/SAT LEFT and RIGHT  inputs.
  2. Connect the SUB/SAT LEFT and RIGHT outputs to the respective LEFT and RIGHT BM speakers.
  3. Adjust the low pass filter for the sub.
  4. Adjust the high pass filters for the output to the BM's - Note that there is no "best" setting for low pass and high pass filters. It depends on the room acoustics, the music, personal tastes etc. A good rule of thumb in this case is to start at the 12 o'clock position. The less bass content that is present in the top speakers will make them more efficient at higher volumes, but too much low mid in your sub can make you listening experience feel tubby in some cases.
  5. Note: The newer BM models include high-pass filters that are identical to the one in the sub. ONLY 1 high pass should be used. Either the one on the sub, or the one on the BM, but not both at the same time. In this case one of them must be set to flat
