Contour 20 Black Edition
The ultimate Contour
Contour 20 Black Edition is the apex of 40 years of a legend
We’ve taken every component and upgraded it. Every nuance and improved it. And every surface and made it black.
All so every emotion in your music can shine.
Clean, clear treble
High frequencies are handled by the renowned Esotar 3 tweeter, which you’ll also find in our Confidence range and our M-series professional reference speakers.
The soft-dome diaphragm is finished with our high-precision DSR coating, formulated and mixed by hand and applied by robots. The process puts the coating at exactly the right density in exactly the right places – so you hear exactly what you’re supposed to hear. Which is exactly what the artist wants you to hear.
Directly behind the diaphragm sits the Hexis. It’s a little dimpled inner dome that smooths out the tweeter’s frequency response and reduces unwanted resonances, the kind that colour your music, by gently guiding the moving air behind the fabric dome. It means you’ll hear high frequencies with all the emotion you’re meant to; so the cocksure sizzle of the hi-hats as the drummer counts in hits precisely as it’s meant to.
Behind it all you'll find a labyrinth of conduits and shaped vents. A large rear chamber and high-quality damping material reduce resonance and ‘ringing’, while a potent neodymium magnet and lightweight aluminium voice-coil provide power and control. It can play louder, with consistent clarity, for longer – which means your ears won’t tire in a long listening session.
Esotar 3 helps your music breathe. It’s one of the cornerstones of modern hi-fi.
Power with control
The mid/bass driver uses a powerful neodymium magnet, and the extended voice-coil winding frees it up to move more. That means there’s less stress on your amplifier and bass extension is maintained. And, because the magnet is smaller, there’s more space for the kind of air movement we want inside the slim cabinet.
Your ears will notice it, too: more attack and better imaging.
The rest of the driver is classic Dynaudio. Contour 20 Black Edition uses a one-piece MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) cone, directly anchored to the extended aluminium voice-coil via its moulded balance ribs – so the whole thing becomes a playing surface. A glass-fibre voice-coil former reduces eddy currents and improves the driver’s agility. Ventilation is optimised. A thousand details form a philosophy that’s been trusted across the hi-fi world since 1977 – and in professional studios for decades.
The new larger-diameter bass-port has been designed to work seamlessly with the new woofer. It’s flared in a specific way at both ends (inside and out), which helps to control air movement for better precision, fewer artefacts, and vastly improved low-bass performance.
Scandinavian engineering
Contour 20 Black Edition has a new second-order crossover using the smallest number of components we could manage – and the best versions of those parts. We’ve used Mundorf capacitors and resistors, a gigantic air-coil and top-quality internal cables. If you want purity, here it is.
You’ll hear that simplicity, too. Directivity is tightly controlled, thanks to the smooth power response. And that means a precise, focussed performance.
The original Contour 20 had a solid foundation – and we’ve kept it. The thick, solid cabinet is shaped to minimise unwanted vibrations and standing waves. And the heavy aluminium baffle (which is actually a lot thicker than it looks) does wonders for increasing stability and eliminating diffraction.

Contour 20 Black Edition: the EISA-award-winning pinnacle of the Contour series
EISA Award - Best Product 2025-2026 - Premium Standmount Loudspeakers.
“These standmount loudspeakers are a testament to the ingenuity of Dynaudio’s R&D department… the Contour 20 Black Edition excels at playing music as it was intended by the artist, and the bass extension is remarkable for a standmount design, bringing full-range listening to spaces unsuited to larger models.”
– EUROPEAN IMAGING AND SOUND ASSOCIATION, August 2025
Black magic
Some manufacturers give options for their Black Edition products. That seems weird to us, so we decided to follow the lead of one of the twentieth century’s greatest poets, Nigel Tufnell. In 1984, he asked: “It’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black”.
Cabinet? Black. Woofer basket? Black. Tweeter front plate? Black. Terminal plate? Black. Anodised aluminium baffle? Black. Bass port? Black? Cabinet? Black.
It’s an investment in sound. An investment in your music collection. And – frankly – it’s pretty damn cool.

Reviews
Whilst the finish is new, the performance remains the same.
“The externally beautifully-curved loudspeaker, true to its name, plays with a beautiful contour, and refrains from placing its own agenda in the foreground.”
