Setting the Dynaudio 18S Subwoofer Input Sensitivity

The input sensitivity setting for the Dynaudio 18S subwoofer is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent potential damage to the amplifier. This article explains how the input sensitivity should be set

  1. Understanding Sensitivity Levels:

    • The 18S subwoofer has four input sensitivity settings: -12 dB, -6 dB, 0 dB and +6dB.
    • Setting the sensitivity to -12 dB is recommended for levels up to 10V (or 22dBu max).
    • The -6 dB setting is suitable for lower levels, specifically up to 4V (or 14dBu max)
    • 0 dB and + 6 dB setting are suitable for consumer (low) levels, respectively up to 2V and 1V. These settings are usually nor relevant in pro installation where interfaces and mixers will output higher levels
  2. How to find which setting to use:

    • Check the technical specifications of your audio interface, mixer or speaker controller and locate the maximum analogue output level for the monitor or main outputs. This value is usually specified as the maximum analogue output (after the D/A converter) corresponding to a digital signal at 0 dBFS.
    • Use the input sensitivity setting that corresponds to this maximum analogue output level. For example, if the maximum level is +18 dBu, set the 18S sensitivity to -12 dB. This will provide approximately 4 dB of headroom and prevent overloading the 18S.
    • If you cannot locate this specification, set the sensitivity to -12 dB to ensure max headroom and lower any risks of overloads..
    • If your source can deliver higher levels, such as +24 dBu or even up to +27 dBu, ensure that your monitoring level (not your mix level) never exceeds 22 dBu when the 18S sensitivity is set to -12 dB. The monitoring level is typically adjusted via your audio interface’s control panel or its volume knob. For detailed guidance on configuring this correctly, please contact your audio interface manufacturer’s support team.
  3. Optimal Performance:

    • It is important to maintain a balance in the audio system to ensure that the subwoofer integrates well with other components, such as the LYD 48 or the BM speakers. The 18S features its own volume control, allowing you to fine-tune its level relative to the satellite speakers using test tones and pink noise in combination with a device that can measure the response (RTA)
